Max Ernst

 Germany, b.1891 - d.1976

Max Ernst was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and surrealism. Exposure to the work of Paul Klee and Giorgio de Chirico, together with his disillusionment after the war, drew Ernst to the anti-aesthetic, inherently anarchistic revolt espoused by the Dadaists, and he became a co-founder of the movement in Cologne.
