Jean Cocteau

France, b.1889 - d.1963

Jean Cocteau worked across many artistic disciplines, including poetry, drawing, painting and film; exploring themes of dreams, mythical narratives and establishing one's identity. At the age of 10, Cocteau's father (who gave him his initial introduction into the world of drawing and painting) commited suicide, leading Jean to retreat into realms of story and fantasy, resulting in an escapist sensibility that permeated through all of Cocteau's work.
