Jean Cocteau
"The less an artwork is understood, the more slowly it unfolds its petals, and the longer it takes to wither."
Cocteau worked across many artistic disciplines, including poetry, drawing, painting and film; exploring themes of dreams, mythical narratives and establishing one's identity. When the artist was ten years old, his father (who had given him his initial introduction into the world of drawing and painting) commited suicide, leading Cocteau to retreat into realms of story and fantasy, resulting in an escapist sensibility that permeated through all his work.
