Richard Long

Overview
"You could say that my work is...a balance between the patterns of nature and the formalism of human, abstract ideas like lines and circles. It is where my human characteristics meet the natural forces and patterns of the world, and that is really the kind of subject of my work."

Richard Long is widely regarded as one of the most important British land artists of the 20th century. His practice bridges Land Art, Conceptual Art and Post-Minimalism, creating a distinctive body of work that has reshaped the way we think about sculpture, landscape and human gesture. Today, Richard Long's art continues to resonate with collectors seeking thoughtful, museum-recognised works with enduring cultural significance.

Long was born in Bristol, and from 1962-65 studied at the West of England College of Art before attending Saint Martin's School of Art in London between 1966-68, where he was tutored by Anthony Caro and Phillip King.

Born in Bristol, Richard Long studied at the West of England College of Art from 1962–65 before attending Saint Martin’s School of Art in London between 1966–68. There, he was tutored by Anthony Caro and Phillip King. From the outset, Richard Long demonstrated a quietly radical approach, redefining what art could be and where it could exist.

His seminal early work, A Line Made by Walking (1967), marked a pivotal moment in contemporary art. By repeatedly walking back and forth across a stretch of grass to create a visible line, Richard Long transformed the landscape through a simple, deliberate action. This act, at once minimal and profound, established themes that continue throughout Richard Long's art: the trace of human movement, the passage of time, and the relationship between nature and abstraction.

These ideas remain central to Richard Long's original art, including his celebrated text works, photographic documentation and editions that capture the spirit of his walks and interventions.

Richard Long is equally renowned for his mud drawings, created using river mud applied directly to gallery walls or onto paper. Describing mud as “a mixture of time, water and stone”, he recognises it as one of the earliest materials used by humankind to create art. By embracing such elemental substances, Richard Long highlights both their physical presence and their historical resonance. Despite his powerful interventions in the landscape, his use of raw, fragile materials ultimately reflects the delicate beauty of the natural world rather than its exploitation.

For collectors, Richard Long prints offer an opportunity to acquire works that encapsulate his conceptual clarity and connection to landscape. Carefully produced and often tied to specific walks or locations, these editions form an important part of Richard Long's art for sale, combining intellectual depth with strong visual impact.

Richard Long is the only artist to have been shortlisted four times for the Turner Prize, which he won in 1989. His work is held in major public collections, including Tate in London and Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, as well as institutions across America, Switzerland and Australia. In 2018, he was awarded a Knighthood in recognition of his outstanding contribution to art.
