Initially a surrealist, Miró's work became broadly more abstract as he aged. He made his first prints in 1930 after agreeing to provide illustrations for a book of poems by the avant-garde writer Tristan Tzara. His graphic output can be divided into three broad categories based upon the techniques he embraced most frequently: etching, lithography and carborundum. Each print is a self-contained work in its own right, an autonomous entity that stands apart from the rest of his output. Miró's devotion to printmaking ran parallel to his wider practice, and this aspect of his work should be seen as a separate career in itself. This naturally lends an added lustre to each piece in terms of collectibility.
