Original Joan Miró Prints for Sale
Miró was one of the most devoted and important printmakers of the 20th century. Although remembered primarily as a painter, he created over 2000 prints during a career spanning five decades. Unlike his compatriot Picasso, who sought to break rules and bend established techniques to his will, Miró preferred to work within the long and rich tradition of European printmaking, creating some of the century's most beautiful and coveted graphic works. We highly recommend his prints to our clients for their desirability and the exuberance they bring to any space.
Initially a surrealist, Miró's work become broadly more abstract as he aged. He made his first prints in 1930 after agreeing to provide illustrations for a book of poems by the avant garde writer Tristan Tzara. Literary projects would be a consistent source of inspiration throughout his career. His graphic output can be divided into three broad catagories based upon the techniques he embraced most frequently: etching, lithography and carborundum. Each print is a self-contained work in its own right, an autonomous entity that stands apart from the oils on canvas. Miró's devotion to printmaking ran parallel to his work as a painter and this aspect of his output should be seen as a separate career in itself. This naturally lends an added lustre to each piece in terms of collectibility.
Miró's prints represent fantastic value and an accessible entry point to the career of one of the most popular and exciting artists in the contemporary art market. The scope of his ingenuity means that there is something for everybody in his oeuvre.
