All Creatures Great and Small

Ellie takes a look at a lovely collection of works and the furry friends who inspired them.

Sometimes an artistic muse comes on four paws; pets have long serviced artists, offering both inspiration and companionship. The life of an artist can often be an introverted one, spending long hours alone in the studio. It’s no wonder therefore that David Hockney holds great affection for his dachshunds Stanley and Boodgie, or that Henri Matisse would dote on his cats by feeding them brioche.

Artists throughout history have long depicted their pets, in some historical instances as an indication of status, other times symbolising loyalty or even guidance. An artwork can even act as a love letter to a cherished animal.

Whatever shape or size, pets have long had a home in art. It is only fair therefore that your furry legged friends are welcome in every Hidden Gallery. We love meeting our customers’ pets so much that in return we’d like to introduce you to some of the pets in our collection. Listed below are some of our highlights, ranging from Tracey Emin’s sentimental sculpture to Chagall’s intricate etching.

Tracey Emin, Docket in My Hand, 2014

Tracey Emin’s cat Docket was very dear to her throughout its 19 years of life. Docket has featured multiple times within Emin’s autobiographical artworks, and this particular sculpture is an exceptional example. The artwork is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, creating an intimate relationship between Docket’s effigy and the viewer. This dynamic demonstrates Emin’s tenderness towards her pet, reiterating her claim that she ‘never knew [she] could love an animal so much, but it is a joining of souls’. From the small edition size of 100, ‘Docket in My Hand’ is a rare and touching artwork fit for Emin fans and cat lovers alike.

Henri Matisse, Young Woman Watching a Fish Swimming Around, 1929

This sophisticated etching by Henri Matisse eloquently captures the fascination we have for keeping fish in our homes. It is scientifically proven that keeping fish can stave off solitariness and reduce stress – perhaps a reason they are kept in dentist and doctor’s waiting rooms! Looking at this stunning artwork has a similar impact - Matisse’s masterful linework is certainly meditative. This piece offers a fantastic opportunity to own a rare Matisse etching, both signed and inscribed by the artist.

Marc Chagall, The Bitch and her Friend, 1952

This etching by Marc Chagall certainly stands out considering the artist’s normally bright palette. ‘The Bitch and her Friend’ is sheet 16 from ‘La Fontaine’s Fables’, a project for the famous art dealer Ambroise Vollard. Selecting Chagall as the illustrator was quite controversial at the time as his work was considered too dreamy to complement La Fontaine’s classical literature. Vollard insisted Chagall’s sound and delicate style was in fact the right choice, and the artist certainly proved him correct. ‘The Bitch and her Friend’ is a rare and exciting artwork from an edition size of 200, both signed and designated in pencil. It would make for a wonderful investment, with the added bonus of being perfect for any dog lover.

Grayson Perry, Chris Whitty’s Cat, 2020

Grayson Perry was a beacon of hope and creativity throughout the Covid pandemic. The artist’s hit programme ‘Grayson Perry’s Art Club’ invigorated a nation growing weary during multiple lockdowns. ‘Chris Whitty’s Cat’ was sculpted on Perry’s programme during the initial lockdown and was individually cast into an incredibly small edition size of 10 silver sculptures. Each piece has been hallmarked and bears the artist’s signature monogram. Topical and humorous, this artwork embodies a moment in time. This sculpture offers the opportunity to own an incredibly sought-after piece of art by not only an iconic artist of the 21st century, but more specifically of 2020.
