Who is Peter Doig?
Peter Doig (b. 1959) is a Scottish representational painter, critically acclaimed for his enigmatic depictions of landscapes and portraits. The artist was born in Edinburgh and raised in Trinidad and Canada, a transitory upbringing that continues to inform his exploration of place. Though Doig’s paintings are influenced by his own experiences, drawing from his personal archive of photographs, their autobiographical roots do not make them unrelatable or overly specific. Each artwork has an uncanny quality that makes them oddly resonant. Doig does not just reflect but rather refracts his memories to make them feel simultaneously familiar and alien.
Doig thoroughly engages with art history, taking inspiration from masters such as Gustav Klimt, Le Corbusier and Henri Matisse. When creating each painting, Doig layers imagery from photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings and film stills. The result is never photorealistic; Doig experiments with painterly traditions to ensure that his work does not solely copy reference images. His unique process is so intoxicating, it’s no surprise that his work is in such high demand.
