Jarid's Porch is an exceptional example of Hodgkin's profound sensitivity to the interplay of colour, gesture and ground. It belongs to the first great blossoming of the artist's printmaking practice in the 1970s, when he had begun to explore the possibilities of hand-colouring. Highly layered and technically complex, it encapsulates the tension between his desire to capture fleeting moments of emotional significance and the time-consuming process necessary to do so.

Hodgkin eschewed the label of 'abstract' artist, and in certain images he includes clearly identifiable fragments of his visual experience. In this piece the titular wraparound porch on a friend's house is expressed as a chevron of rich lemon yellow, an oasis of light in the velvety darkness of a summer's night. The matte qualities of the hand-applied gouache (present in the porch and also in the pale-grey margins framing the subject) interact with the crisp, oily layers of lithographic ink beneath, beading and pooling in unpredictable ways. This ensures that each edition of Jarid's Porch is subtly different from the others, an intimate variation on a theme.

Integral to the beauty of this work is the thick, handmade paper chosen as the printing ground. Rich veins of texture run through the sheet, and the water-based gouache has caused it to gather in sculptural wrinkles around the yellow porch.
