For all their reputation of being grim and brooding, many of Lowry's paintings were infused with a sly and affectionate sense of humour, particularly in his later years. Meeting Point takes this a step further, presenting us with an almost surrealistic image of a crowd vanishing into an impossibly thin building, women entering on one side and men on the other.
Discussing the figures in his paintings, Lowry admitted that "...the truth is that I was not painting them. I have been called a painter of the Manchester workpeople. But my figures are not exactly that. They are ghostly figures which tenant these courts and lane-ways which seem to me so beautiful, they are symbols of my mood, they are myself."
