Stand-Out Sculptures

A celebration of Hidden's sculpture portfolio

At Hidden we pride ourselves on the eclectic nature of our collection. In fact, as I write this, I face a wall which presents works by Francis Bacon, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol: a joyous, yet undeniably unconventional combination indeed! Such a varied collection offers us the joy to work with a variety of mediums, one of which I wanted to celebrate today. Works in sculpture offer a unique visual experience, with every point of view providing a new way of encountering the piece. The selection of sculptures below have been sourced with the same principals we apply to all of our works: quality, rarity and investment potential.

If works on paper are more your style, at the bottom of this article you will find a curated private view of lithographs, etchings and screenprints by some of the greatest sculptors of the last 100 years.

Henry Moore, Maquette for Two Piece Reclining Figure No. 1, 1959 - 74

Though Moore's early career was largely defined by a rigid commitment to carved stone and wood, the 1940s saw him begin to experiment with bronze casting. These experiments granted the artist a newfound creative freedom: a freedom which gradually eroded his reliance on preparatory sketches on paper. As such, by the mid-1950s, Moore instead explored his ideas in the form of small bronze maquettes. As with many of his preparatory works, Moore sought to achieve a high level of finish in his maquettes by painstakingly hand-applying and removing various acids from the surface of the works to create his desired patina.

Moore's ground-breaking body of work ushered in an exciting, new modern era of sculpture.
This maquette offers the perfect opportunity to own an iconic Henry Moore bronze (produced in an incredibly low edition of only 7 works) at a more affordable and manageable scale.

Grayson Perry, Chris Whitty's Cat, 2021

Grayson Perry was a beacon of hope and creativity throughout the COVID pandemic. The artist’s hit programme ‘Grayson Perry’s Art Club’ invigorated a nation growing weary during multiple lockdowns. ‘Chris Whitty’s Cat’ was sculpted on Perry’s programme during the initial lockdown and was individually cast into an incredibly small edition size of 10 silver sculptures. Each piece has been hallmarked and bears the artist’s signature monogram. Topical and humorous, yet visually awe-inspiring, this is a phenomenal example of Perry's sculptural work.

Grayson Perry remains a strong contender for the nation's most beloved artist, so demand for his work is understandably strong. Mix in this work's unusual medium, low edition size and origin story and the truly special nature of this work becomes immediately apparent.

Pablo Picasso, Grosse Tete - Profil Droit, 1965

This wonderfully expressive figural sculpture sees Picasso reduce the general form to its most basic and expressive state. This sense of simplicity is amplified by the crisp white surface of the natural white clay which, when coupled with the simplified design, merge to create an expressive sense of movement as if the figure was captured while walking or dancing. This interest in simplicity, sometimes referenced as primitivism, reflects Picasso’s modern sensibility and interest in decorative reduction.

Pablo Picasso is widely regarded as one of the most popular artists of all time and his market certainly shows no sign of cooling. The small edition size and visually appealing nature of this piece make it a fantastic option for investment.

Tracey Emin, Docket in my Hand, 2014

Tracey Emin’s cat Docket was very dear to her throughout its 19 years of life. Docket has featured multiple times within Emin’s autobiographical artworks, and this particular sculpture is an exceptional example. The artwork is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, creating an intimate relationship between Docket’s effigy and the viewer. This dynamic demonstrates Emin’s tenderness towards her pet, reiterating her claim that she ‘never knew [she] could love an animal so much, but it is a joining of souls’. From the small edition size of 100, ‘Docket in My Hand’ is a rare and touching artwork fit for Emin fans and cat lovers alike.

Emin has gained a distinctive popularity for the deeply personal nature of her work, as exemplified by this beautifully intimate piece. Such an expression of enduring love is sure to resonate with viewers for years to come.

Grayson Perry, Claire, 2021

This porcelain sculpture of the artist's alter-ego Claire is one of a very small group of uniquely hand-painted sculptures made to be gifted to the most 'normal' person in the audience of his 2021 tour. Featuring his childhood teddy and beloved sidekick Alan Measles, this piece is rich with the adjacent humour and sentimentality of Perry's body of work.

Grayson Perry is arguably one of the most iconic British artists of recent years, so demand for his work is strong. The combination of this sculpture's trademark subject, unique nature and origin make it a fantastic option for investment.
