Keith Haring for International Volunteers Day

Acquisition Alert!

This vibrant lithograph and first day cover were each produced to commemorate the issue of United Nations postage stamps for International Volunteer Day on the 6th May 1988.

Adopted by the UN to celebrate the contribution of volunteers and their role in making peace and sustainable development a reality, the International Volunteer Day's philosophy was very much in keeping with Haring's approach to life. From the earliest days of his career he was a devoted social activist, acutely aware of the political issues surrounding his work. To mark IVD 1988 Haring produced an original lithograph featuring two interlocking figures, a wonderful testament to the spirit of collaboration and openness that marked his oeuvre.

We have not seen before an example of this lithograph with an adhesive stamp attached and franked.  As such, we believe this to be a very rare “Official Issue” and therefore highly desirable.

The first day cover features a reproduction of the lithograph and two of the stamps franked on their day of issue, it was signed in black marker by Haring at the UN in New York.
