Grayson Perry's Strange Clay

Exploring the ceramic works of the wonderful Grayson Perry.

The recent success of ‘Strange Clay’, the Hayward Gallery’s hit exhibition exploring clay and contemporary ceramics, impresses that the ancient medium is just as vital now as it was then. The dynamism of clay and its endless possibilities of invention have made it a staple for contemporary artists striving to experiment and push material boundaries.

The contemporary popularity of ceramic sculpture would not be so strong if it were not for Grayson Perry paving the way. Perry was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 2003 for his ceramic vessels, through which the artist subverted classical forms with a modern and humorous slant. Tackling social issues and autobiographical subject matter, the artist enjoys creating sculptures which not only function as beautiful works of art, but politically charged objects. The artist’s vessels are on display as part of ‘Strange Clay’, a testament to their enduring success and timeless quality.

The enduring popularity of Grayson Perry’s ceramics make them an excellent addition to any art collection. Following the artist’s recent endeavours to inspire the public throughout the Covid pandemic, love for the artist is at an all-time high. Rare, collectible, and always enjoyable, Hidden Gallery’s selection of Perry sculptures are sure to charm your houseguests.

Here are some highlights from our collection:

Piggy Bank, 2017

Perry’s ‘Piggy Bank’ was originally conceived as part of his exhibition ‘The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever’ at the Serpentine Gallery in 2017. The original sculpture was interactive, allowing visitors to insert their spare change into whichever slot they felt best represented them. His series of collectible painted and glazed ceramic piggy banks are complete with the original Serpentine Gallery box and the artist’s logo on the underside.

Claire, 2021

This porcelain sculpture of the artist's alter-ego Claire is one of a very small selection of uniquely hand-painted sculptures. Each sculpture was gifted during his 2021 tour to whoever he deemed to be the most ‘normal’ member of his audience. The artist’s alter-ego Claire is as beloved as his artworks, therefore this sculpture is a perfect marriage of all things quintessentially Perry.

Plate, unknown date

This digital print of Perry’s Claire personality, onto a ceramic plate was originally a gift from the artist to a prominent collector. We believe this work could be unique, as we have not encountered this design on a Perry plate previously. The piece is hand-signed on the underside, alongside the artist’s monogram. This artwork offers an exciting opportunity to own a rare piece by one of the most revered artists of the 21st century.
