Figures just out demonstrate that investing in art remains a growing pursuit with strong demand continuing and with collectors as eager as ever to add new works to their collections.
Christies, the world’s foremost auction house, grew overall sales during the first half of the year to $4.1 billion, up 17% from the same period a year ago. This total included more than $600 million in privately brokered art sales.
Archrival Sotheby’s are estimated to have auctioned roughly $3.2 billion in art during the first half of the year, up 12% from the previous year. Whilst Phillips are estimated to have sold around $587 million, up 38% from 2021.
Meanwhile Bonhams is on a buying spree, having bought three major European auction houses in as many months, following major investment.
Why does this matter you might ask? Well, because in my experience what happens in the print market usually follows the wider art market - as anyone following the trajectory of works on paper by many of the major names will attest. There have been record prices for print works by Warhol, Hockney, Basquiat, and many more, whilst Hidden has witnessed record demand for Picasso, Miro, Invader and Bridget Riley amongst others.
We pride ourselves on helping many of our clients take advantage of this opportunity for the first time, so don’t wait to see what happens next, drop me a line or call our galleries for an informal chat today.

Pablo Picasso, Colombe Volant (à l'Arc-en-ciel), 1952
The ‘Dove of Peace’ is arguably the most iconic and globally recognised image from the artist’s entire output. As such it is extremely sought after and very rarely found in its hand signed form. This piece is an extremely fine example with notably vibrant colours.
Marc Chagall, Granada from Paroles Peintes I, 1962
The colours on this particular piece are as strong and lively as ever. That, coupled with the low edition size, make this lithograph an incredibly beautiful and sought after work.
Bridget Riley, Wave, 1975
This piece is a typical example of Riley’s intricate, stylish geometric abstractions that helped her pioneer the Op Art movement in the 1960s. Exceptional examples of the artist's signature style are hugely sought after which makes this a hugely sought after work.
Joan Miro, Album 19, 1963
Miro was a master lithographer and this work shows off his amazing use of shape and colour to fantastic effect. It will look amazing in any home and has international appeal, which means a worldwide market when and if you ever decide to part with it.
Antony Gormley, Body, 2014
A fanastic and affordable way of owning an original hand-signed work by world-renowned sculptor and Turner Prize Winner, Antony Gormley. This piece is a fine example of his fascination with the body, making it widely recognisable as his work.
