J'aime Matisse

An exciting set of acquisitions

We have recently added some fantastic rare artworks by Henri Matisse to our collection, and thought it rude not to share them with you.

Matisse is highly regarded as a painter, of course, but he was also a dedicated draughtsman and printmaker, producing more than 800 prints in a range of techniques, from linocuts and woodcuts to lithography and etching.

Matisse’s printed works offer an affordable way to own an original and iconic work by one of the 20th century’s greatest artists. Hand-signed works by the artist are rare, the market for which remains consistently strong.

Henri Matisse, Untitled 3833 (J'aime Marie), 1948

This very rare suite was printed by Mourlot Frères in Paris on pure rag tinted wove Papeteries d’Arches paper in an edition of 320 sets only, of which 300 were for sale. It was published in 1948.  The print is accompanied by a copy of the justification page signed by Matisse.

Henri Matisse, Untitled (Nude Study for Poesies), 1932

This etching was made by Matisse as a study in preparation for his suite of 29 etchings to accompany the 1932 book Poesies ("poems") by Stéphane Mallarmé.

Henri Matisse, Untitled 3835 (J'aime Marie), 1948

From one of Matisse's most complicated and successful printmaking projects, which was to take seven years to complete. Florilège des Amours de Ronsard illustrates the love poems of the 16th century poet Pierre de Ronsard.

Henri Matisse, Untitled (Profil de Femme), 1943

In the early 1940s, in war-torn Europe, publisher Martin Fabiani offered Henri Matisse an extraordinary commission. Matisse was to choose a few of his favourite themes and make a series of drawings.

Henri Matisse, Le Grand Nu (Duthuit 403), 1906

An extremely rare and early hand signed lithograph. The image, which is an unusually large work at 448 x 352 mm, demonstrates clear echoes of his later cut-out nudes. It is an extremely desirable work.

Henri Matisse, Nice Travail et Joie , 1947

A super-rare and beautiful lithograph, from an original painting by Matisse, published in 1947 by Syndicat d'Initiative de Nice. Produced on Arches paper and in stunning condition.
