Henri Matisse | Bath: Featuring all 40 of the famed 'Cut Outs' by Henri Matisse

16 February - 14 March 2023

We are thrilled to announce that original works from Matisse's iconic portfolio 'Verve' are coming to Hidden, Bath!

Matisse was a master of his craft, responsible for revolutionary advancements in modern art. Known as a significant player in the ‘Fauvist’ movement, in which artists were known as ‘wild beasts’ due to their intense palettes and feral brushstrokes, Matisse pioneered decorative and flattened forms. When old age affected his career, the artist famously turned to cut paper collage. He employed a technique known as ‘papier découpé' that allowed for bigger, bolder art pieces, only solidifying his reputation as a key figure of the 20th century.

Matisse’s ‘Verve’ portfolio reproduces his famed paper-cut designs in an edition of original lithographs. Matisse worked on the collection until his death in 1954, making it the artist's last body of work. The portfolio was produced in collaboration with Fernand Mourlot, an innovator of lithographic printmaking in the 20th Century, and published posthumously in 1958 by Teriade.
