It features one of Picasso's interpretations of Eugène Delacroix's 1834 painting Women of Algiers in their Apartment. These interpretations would eventually result in a series of fifteen paintings and over one hundred works on paper.
Picasso embarked upon the series six weeks after the death of Matisse. His friend and rival had been famous for his vividly coloured odalisques, and the subject held strong personal significance for Picasso. The painting depicted in this poster is held by the Wadsworth Atheneum Art Museum in Hartford, Connecticut.
