L. S. Lowry described the inspiration for this intriguing scene as a highly intelligent-looking family he observed waiting at a bus stop. The figure in the centre represents the father, disappointed in his children. The artist himself can be identified as the figure on the right-hand side, sketchbook in pocket, quietly observing the scene before him. Suspended against a cloudy, white-flake background, the family appears as much an absurd fantasy as a concrete reality.
