His Family is an offset lithograph after the 1955 oil painting variously referred to as The Family Group, The Onlookers, Father of Six Children, and Father of Six.
L. S. Lowry described the inspiration for this intriguing scene as a highly intelligent-looking family he observed waiting at a bus stop. The figure in the centre represents the father, disappointed in his children. The artist himself can be identified as the figure on the right-hand side, sketchbook in pocket, quietly observing the scene before him. Suspended against a cloudy, white-flake background, the family appears as much an absurd fantasy as a concrete reality.
