Original Marc Chagall Prints for Sale
"Something would have been lacking in my life if...I had not at a certain stage become involved in engraving and lithography. Each time I had a lithographic stone or a copper plate in my hands, I felt that I was touching a talisman to which I could entrust all my sorrows and all my joys."
Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the modern era, Marc Chagall developed a highly distinctive visual language that defied categorisation. Across a remarkable career spanning almost a century, he explored numerous mediums including ceramics, illustration, stained glass, theatre design and printmaking. His achievements in lithography and etching remain among the most celebrated of the 20th century, with more than one thousand lithographs and over five hundred etchings produced during his lifetime.
Born in Vitebsk, Russia, into a deeply religious Jewish family, Chagall’s early life and travels profoundly shaped his artistic vision. He worked in Vitebsk, St Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin and Paris before eventually settling in France in 1923, where he established himself as one of the country’s leading modern artists. During this period, he collaborated closely with the renowned art dealer Ambroise Vollard, creating important illustrated print series including Gogol’s Dead Souls, Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables, and a celebrated suite inspired by biblical stories. In 1941, he fled Vichy, France, for the safety of New York, only returning to Europe in 1948.
Shortly after his return, he embarked on a significant new chapter in lithography with a series of illustrations for four stories from The Thousand and One Nights. The medium proved perfectly suited to his expressive use of luminous colour and fluid imagery. Working at the famed Atelier Mourlot in Paris, Chagall formed a lifelong friendship with master printer Charles Sorlier, whose technical expertise helped bring many of the artist’s most admired editions to life.
