This piece occupies a special place within Banksy's print oeuvre, as it was one of the last editions made available for purchase to the general public.
It is based upon a mural that the artist created in 2010 on the wall of a pub in Bermondsey. Featuring an homage to the work of Keith Haring, it combines two of the most influential figures in the world of street art into a single iconic work. Like Banksy, Haring began his career working as a street artist, combining his knowledge of high art with an instantly accessible aesthetic that spoke of contemporary societal issues and demonstrated the extraordinary social power of art.
Artists have traditionally used the dog to represent themes of loyalty and obedience, but in Haring's work it became a symbol of oppression and aggression. A warning about the corruption and abuses of power that pervade society, he intended it as a cautionary image that would inspire the viewer to think critically about the narratives presented to them.
Banksy embraces these implications, taking them further and turning Haring's barking dog into one of the fighting animals commonly regarded as weapons within the world of street gangs.
In this work, Banksy draws attention to gang culture and youth violence while responding to them in a way that's emphatically non-violent. By appropriating Haring's barking dog as his weapon, he uses art to make a stand and conveys a pacifist message as iconic as his legendary Flower Thrower.
This work is accompanied by a Pest Control certificate.
