Agnes Martin, the American abstract painter, is recognised across the world for her soft and exceptionally measured compositions. Her artworks are characterised by gentle pencil lines and subtle washes of colour. The divine pull of Martin’s work, with its spiritual roots and profound strength, leaves an indelible impression on any viewer.

Through her carefully rendered paintings, Martin harnessed abstract glories of being such as happiness, love and friendship – all of the qualities of existence that make life beautiful. She invested in the power of non-representational art to provoke pure emotions, prioritising an instinctual reaction to her art over a more academic contemplation of theme or subject.

Behind her subtle paintings, Martin’s life was turbulent and challenging. She struggled with paranoid schizophrenia and was hospitalised on multiple occasions due to psychosis. The artist famously fled from New York in 1967, where she had spent the last decade nurturing her flourishing career. Her sudden move coincided with the devastating demolition of her home and studio. She eventually settled in New Mexico, living a life of solitude and devoting herself to meditation and writing. She did not paint again until 1971.

Though she was adamant that her artworks were not inspired by her personal life, her methodical paintings are a calm within a storm. There are fantastic photos of the artist in her studio wearing quilted workwear, with a pattern that very much echoes the grids in her work. Her practice consumed her and became her armour.

Martin’s work is linked to Minimalism, but she personally aligned herself with the more subjective Abstract Expressionist movement. The movement was male dominated, and Martin carved out her own space and established herself as a stand-out, unique voice. Compared to her counterparts who firmly abided by the doctrines of Abstract Expressionism, Martin created much more transcendent works of art. Her work did not strictly follow the vocabulary of either Minimalism or Abstract Expressionism; instead, she had a much more spiritual practice that took inspiration from Zen Buddhism.

Printmaking allowed Martin to further develop her signature graphic style. Screenprinting and lithography were of particular appeal to the artist, as both methods of printmaking enabled her to experiment with different qualities of line. Martin enjoyed creating and exhibiting bodies of work as a series. Due to the nature of printmaking and its process of creating multiples, Martin could explore a different means of creating a series of images.

In 1991, Martin released a deluxe catalogue for the occasion of her retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum. This publication was composed of illustrations, verse and prose written by the artist, a supplement of her Jawlensky Award and ten outstanding lithographs.

Between 1974 and 1993, Martin famously painted the majority of her works on six-foot-square canvases. The Paintings and Drawings 1974-1990 lithographs were created to explore some of the works created during this time period, transforming her large paintings into intimate and more collectible works of art. These lithographs are a valuable addition to any collection, enabling collectors to acquire a selection of Martin’s most beloved compositions at the same size as just one painting.

  • Hidden is proud to present lithographs from Agnes Martin’s Paintings and Drawings 1974–1990. For the first time, Hidden is offering collectors the unique opportunity to buy lithographs from the portfolio as individual artworks.
