• The Role of Conservation Framing at Hidden

The artworks we offer at Hidden are rare, fragile, and limited in number—Matisse etchings from editions as low as 25 often grace our gallery walls. Preserving each piece is not only essential to maintaining its value, but also to ensuring that the artist’s legacy continues to exist in physical form for future generations.

The majority of works that you'll find in our gallery have passed through the workshop of Hidden Framing, specialists in bespoke conservation framing. More than just a visual enhancement, a frame is a protective environment designed to safeguard the artwork.

  • So, what is conservation framing?

    So, what is conservation framing?

To meet conservation standards, all materials must be acid-free, non-damaging, and fully reversible—ensuring the artwork remains in its original condition. Every element, from mountboard to hanging hardware, is chosen with the long-term preservation of the piece in mind.

    Mountboards

Hidden Framing use either conservation standard or museum-grade cotton-rag mountboards. Museum-grade board, made from virgin cotton fibre, is naturally inert and offers the highest protection. Conservation board, made from wood pulp, is treated to remove acids that could damage artwork. Both types are buffered with calcium carbonate to slow aging caused by pollutants.

Mountboards also prevent direct contact between artwork and glass, protecting against rippling or ink adhesion. For attachment, the framers prefer plastic corners or Japanese mulberry paper tape with distilled water—methods that are safe and fully reversible.

When float mounting, the framers attach a smaller board to the back of the artwork, which is then secured to a larger mount using minimal glue—preserving integrity while creating a beautiful presentation.

Light exposure is a major cause of fading. That’s why all gallery pieces are framed with 99% UV protective or museum-grade glass, the latter also featuring anti-reflective clarity. For large pieces or travel, UV-protective acrylic is also an option.

Our archival backing boards are calcium-buffered and water-resistant, gently supporting the artwork inside the frame. For box frames, we use MDF with a protective mountboard barrier to prevent acid migration.

All frames are constructed from solid wood, joined with glue and “V-nails.” For heavier or larger pieces, the team add internal sub-frames for extra strength and incorporate split-batten hanging systems for safe wall display.

All our frames are sealed to keep out dust and insects, helping maintain a stable internal environment. But where and how you hang your framed work also matters:

    • Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources.

    • Keep away from damp areas and external walls.

    • Maintain stable humidity and temperature.

Paper is sensitive to its surroundings, so minimizing fluctuations will preserve its condition and reduce the risk of rippling.

  • Trusted by Collectors

From rare prints and delicate drawings to ceramics and two palettes once used by Picasso, Hidden has framed it all.
