Damien Hirst's print market has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth. In 2022, signed limited edition prints by Hirst sold for between £700 and £151,200 at auction, with the latter price setting a record for the most expensive Hirst print-multiple ever sold. The market continued to show strength in 2023, with total sales exceeding £3 million for 300 prints.
  • CHOOSING YOUR HIRST PRINT

When selecting a Damien Hirst print, consider the following:
  • 1. PERSONAL CONNECTION: 1. PERSONAL CONNECTION: 1. PERSONAL CONNECTION:

    1. PERSONAL CONNECTION:

Choose a piece that resonates with you aesthetically and conceptually. Hirst's corpus of graphic work takes in a wide spectrum of philosophical questions, ranging from the big questions of life to the joy of colour itself. Whether you're seeking the lighter side of Hirst or keen to embrace some of his darker messages, you're sure to find the perfect print for your taste within his oeuvre.

  • 2. SERIES POPULARITY: 2. SERIES POPULARITY: 2. SERIES POPULARITY:

    2. SERIES POPULARITY:

Spot and Butterfly prints are perennial favourites among collectors. Hirst began making his notorious Spot Paintings in 1988 and has created graphic variations of them in a variety of different print media. Instantly recognisable to a global audience, they are among his most sought-after works.  Combining a harmonious palette with an ominous adherence to a regimented formula, they are shot through with tension. They appear as parts of an endless series, both joyful and unnerving. Most are given titles drawn from a catalogue of biochemical and diagnostic reagents, drawing attention to our reliance upon drugs and medicine.

A potent symbol of the resurrection in Christian iconography, the life cycle of the butterfly was the subject of Hirst's seminal installation 'In and Out of Love' (1991), in which visitors were invited to observe the birth, life and death of these insects within the timespan of a single exhibition. They speak of redemption and joy, but their beauty can be fragile and deceptive; even in death they preserve the illusion of life. Hirst has described himself as possessing a "Victorian obsession with nature" and refers to the butterfly as a "universal trigger".

Smaller editions often hold higher value but don't discount larger editions of popular works. Smaller editions often hold higher value but don't discount larger editions of popular works. Since 2016 Hirst has collaborated with HENI Editions on 14 series of prints, some of which were produced in editions of over 3000. They are some of his most widely traded editioned works. Hirst has also produced a number of prints based upon For the Love of God, the notorious diamond encrusted skull. Released in editions of up to 1700, they have enjoyed a sustained following among collectors.

    4. INVESTMENT POTENTIAL:

Consider market trends and the print's potential for appreciation. With 300 of Hirst's prints sold at auction in 2023, demand for his editioned works remains healthy. Works from his Spots series and works featuring the motif of the butterfly have remained at the vanguard of his most desirable images.
  • 5. CONDITION: 5. CONDITION:

    5. CONDITION:

Opt for prints in excellent condition to ensure long-term value. This is especially true of prints that make use of unusual materials such as foil block and diamond dust, as many of Hirst's prints do. In works such as this, any imperfection will be immediately apparent. Here at Hidden, we go to great lengths to ensure the artworks we offer are in impeccable shape.
