It wasn't until the 20th century that artists began signing their prints as a matter of course. Lifetime impressions of Albrecht Dürer's engravings regularly fetch six figure prices, yet most are unsigned. Rembrandt's international career was built on the back of his etchings; again, most lack a handwritten signature. For centuries, it was the exception for an artist to scribble their name in the margin, not the rule.

The lack of a signature will often (though not always) mean a lower price point for the collector, allowing them the incredible opportunity to acquire original works by important figures for prices far lower than they might expect.
