The critic Lawrence Alloway wrote that the postwar generation of British artists "could neither start again, nor stay as it was, as if nothing had happened." The effects of two world wars, dramatic social upheaval, and the flowering of modernism in music, literature and the visual arts all added up to a heady concoction that shattered any sense of certainty in what an artist ought to do. This splintering of ideas into an open spectrum of possibilities led to an environment of incredible vibrancy and diversity.

Many of the artists in the Modern British canon were devoted printmakers and were responsible for some of the most innovative graphic works of the 20th century. Their work with revolutionary workshops such as Kelpra Studio and the Curwen Press established several milestones in the development of international printmaking. Substantial collections of Modern British prints are held by numerous museums across the globe and are highly sought-after by collectors the world over.
