One of a Kind
The Rarest Pieces from our Collection

One of a Kind: The Rarest Pieces from our Collection

Current viewing_room
  • There is nothing more thrilling than owning an artwork direct from the hand of a master. Collectors become part of an artist's legacy when they acquire an original artwork, forging an indelible link to an art-world legend. This remarkable connection to a household name is certainly even more intimate when acquiring an artwork that is one of a kind.

Hidden specialises in exceptional, rare artworks meaning that there is principally only ever one of each artwork within our collection. Our completely one of a kind artworks are certainly the rarest pieces we hold; whether it is a drawing, painting or artefact, these highly personal pieces offer an illuminating insight into key moments of major artists' careers.
  • Joan Miro, Untitled (Catálogo), 1968
    Artworks

    Joan Miro

    Untitled (Catálogo), 1968

This exquisite drawing is a delightful melange of familiar Miró motifs. Automatic lines combine to create an anthropomorphic figure decked in auras of pure colour. Miró explained that his simplified figures were “more human and more alive than they would be if represented in all their detail. Represented in detail, they would lose their imaginary quality, which enhances everything.”

An eight-pointed star flickers proudly at the top right of the image. Stars appear frequently throughout Miró’s work, a celestial signpost to the dreamworld we inhabit while we sleep. Finally, the artist’s majestic signature becomes its own compositional element, a joyous celebration of Miró’s confidence and self-possession.

This unique drawing is an extraordinary example of Miró’s later style, and represents a fabulous opportunity to grab a unique piece of 20th century art history.

  • Keith Haring, Untitled 10 from "Dancing Men", 1991
    Artworks

    Keith Haring

Untitled 10 from "Dancing Men", 1991

A fabulous animation cell produced for a cartoon broadcast in the iconic series Sesame Street. Haring would have thoroughly appreciated his imagery being used in a series famous for its inclusivity and kindness. Although created after his death these animations were designed with the close collaboration of the Keith Haring Foundation, and are a wonderful illustration of the artist's spirit of inclusivity and compassion.

In the late 1980s the production team behind Sesame Street reached out to Haring to explore the possibility of creating several short animation pieces for use on the programme. Unfortunately, Haring passed away at the tragically young age of 31 in February 1990. In 1989 he had set up the Keith Haring Foundation to continue his artistic and philanthropic legacy, promoting the distribution of his art.

The animation project was continued under the close supervision of David Stark, whom Haring had personally appointed to the Foundation. Seven cartoons were produced in total. They were first broadcast between November 1992 and February 1993 and were used repeatedly for over a decade. Each animation cell within our collection is one of a kind; since they come from the original animation sequence, there is only one piece in existence for each frame.

  • Grayson Perry, Frock and Gas Mask, 2020
    Artworks

    Grayson Perry

    Frock and Gas Mask, 2020

Grayson Perry's stock has risen to the extent where he is not only instantly recognisable on the street, but his artistic style and voice have seeped into the public consciousness. This drawing in chalk pastel was created during and in response to Covid-19, a time in which Perry became a champion for creativity in the face of adversity through his television programme 'Grayson's Art Club'.

Where once a drawing of a man in a 'gas mask and dress' combination would have puzzled the viewer, it now seems ludicrous for its creator not to be identified as Grayson Perry.

  • Grayson Perry, Untitled (Ghost Vase)
    Artworks

    Grayson Perry

    Untitled (Ghost Vase)

This unique drawing in black pen of a 'Ghost Vase' was created on hotel stationery paper (Chateau Hotels, Netherlands) by the inimitable Grayson Perry.

Perry is perhaps best known as a ceramicist and his poignant vases are amongst his most well known artworks. He masterfully subverts the decorative function of ceramics to explore both personal and political topics. His vases have classical forms yet are decorated in bright colours, depicting subjects at odds with their attractive appearance. This spectacular drawing, which is both hand-signed and features the artist's iconic stamp, refers to an essential part of the artist's practice.

  • Damien Hirst, Beautiful Nightcall of the Twilight Zone Spin Painting for Yet Unborn, 2012
    Artworks

    Damien Hirst

Beautiful Nightcall of the Twilight Zone Spin Painting for Yet Unborn, 2012

Damien Hirst’s ‘spin paintings’ are amongst the artist’s most iconic works, and significantly contributed to the unfolding of contemporary art as we know it. The artist splits his work thematically into two distinct opposites – life and death. Hirst’s ‘spin paintings’ can be seen to link these two strands, as they erupt with life and energy whilst embracing chaos and uncertainty.

Initiated in 1995, Hirst worked in collaboration with fellow artist Angus Fairhurst to develop the ‘spin paintings’ at the event ‘A Fete Worse than Death’. The artist pours paint onto a rotating canvas to create these works; the spin machine originally used to create the very first paintings consisted of an inverted electric drill and a piece of wood.

'Beautiful Nightcall of the Twilight Zone Spin Painting for Yet Unborn' encapsulates some of the artist’s key concepts through a completely one of a kind composition, created using one of his most celebrated techniques.

  • Ai Weiwei, Untitled 2015 (White), 2015
    Artworks

    Ai Weiwei

    Untitled 2015 (White), 2015
On the occasion of his retrospective at the Royal Academy between 19th September - 13th December 2015, Weiwei produced 110 unique dust jackets in a selection of ten colours to accompany a deluxe edition of the exhibition catalogue. Using a fully loaded brush he applied a bold, calligraphic stroke of white industrial paint to a sheet of Munken Polar paper and allowed the medium to run and dribble under its own weight. This work refers directly to Weiwei's iconic Coloured Vases series, in which he dips antique Chinese ceramics into the same brightly coloured paint and allows it to flow downwards over the vessels.

This piece is signed and numbered by the artist.
