Hockney’s innovative practice has helped to define much of modern and contemporary art, from his early years as a Pop Art pioneer to his ongoing experimentation with new media and technologies. Now 88 years old, his status as one of Britain’s most essential artists is firmly cemented. His figurative studies and landscapes are renowned across the globe, and there is an insatiable appetite for his work amongst both collectors and art enthusiasts.

 
Everyone wants a piece of Hockney. Whilst his auction record is $90.3 million (achieved in 2018 at Christie’s for the painting ‘Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)’, 1972), his limited-edition prints and original posters offer an accessible means of collecting his work.

Hockney's print editions span more than seven decades and cover an extraordinary range of techniques. His early etchings — including the Illustrations for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm (1969) — showcase his gifts as a draughtsman in their purest form. The Paper Pools series (1980), made using a unique hand-pressed paper pulp process with master printer Ken Tyler, remains one of the most technically inventive print projects of the 20th century. His lithographs, posters and photocopier prints each represent a different chapter of a restless, ever-evolving practice. On the question of signed versus unsigned: hand-signed impressions are generally more desirable and command a premium, though unsigned works from important editions remain highly collectible in their own right.
