Hockney’s innovative practice has helped to define much of modern and contemporary art, from his early years as a Pop Art pioneer to his ongoing experimentation with new media and technologies. Now 88 years old, his status as one of Britain’s most essential artists is firmly cemented. His figurative studies and landscapes are renowned across the globe, and there is an insatiable appetite for his work amongst both collectors and art enthusiasts.

Everyone wants a piece of Hockney. Whilst his auction record is $90.3 million (achieved in 2018 at Christie’s for the painting ‘Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)’, 1972), his limited-edition prints and original posters offer an accessible means of collecting his work.

Why collect a limited-edition Hockney print?

Printmaking has remained at the core of Hockney's practice for over 70 years. He has created some of the most essential editions of the last century, collaborating with master printers such as Maurice Payne and Ken Tyler.

Hockney was particularly captivated by etching during his earliest years as a printmaker. The process of creating an etching suited his extraordinary skills as a draughtsman, helping him to evolve his distinct visual language. Lithography was also integral to his practice; known as 'the painter's medium', lithography enabled Hockney to expand his painterly prowess.

In 1986, Hockney applied the logic of traditional printmaking to the rudimentary process of printing with a photocopier machine. He used the unconventional device to create innovative, multi-layered 'home-made' prints. These experimental prints are the antecedents of his iPad drawings, which have redefined the possibilities of graphic art in the 21st century.

Whilst the price tag is significantly smaller for his original prints than his unique works, they are no less important and can be found in major public and private collections across the globe. Purchasing his prints allows collectors to take home a museum-quality artwork by contemporary art's reigning champion.

    Why collect a Hockney poster?

Original posters afford the opportunity to own a genuine piece of Hockney's legacy. Posters from landmark exhibitions encapsulate key chapters of the artist’s career, existing as coveted slices of art history.

As Hockney designs his posters to grab attention and pull a crowd, they tend to feature his most iconic imagery. He reinterprets painted masterpieces through lithography and screenprinting, allowing collectors to acquire his world-class artworks without breaking the bank.

Because the artist’s career burgeoned in the mid 20th century, finding posters in good condition is no easy task. Sourcing examples without fading or trimmed margins is rare, and those with imperfections will have lost a lot of their original value. Posters in excellent condition, such as the works within Hidden's collection, are proper time capsules that will enhance any home with a bit of Hockney magic.

As a bonus, posters are often large! Collectors can therefore get a lot for their money.
