James joined Hidden in 2022. He graduated with a degree in Fine Art Painting and Printmaking from The University of Gloucestershire in 2010. His studies gave him a thorough grounding in the technical aspects of etching and lithography, while allowing him to explore critical discourses of Modernism and Post-modernism.
A perfectionist with a granular knowledge of papers, pigments, artist biography and catalogues raisonnes, James brings his expert knowledge to his role as Hidden’s buyer, scouring the globe for exceptional works on paper and original prints that chart the dramatic course of Modern and Contemporary art over the past century. In keeping with Hidden’s ethos of openness and inclusivity, he is dedicated to expanding the exciting world of graphic editions to as many people as possible. To this end, he also writes Hidden’s weekly newsletter.
James is a passionate collector, with a particular weakness for Spanish Modernism. For him, these artworks are talismans of a vibrant history that seem to possess some of the magic of their creators. Each one represents a moment of connection and communion with a great artist.
Among James’s favourite museums are the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague, Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris and The Courtauld Gallery in London.
