Performance artist and
painter Chetwynd changed her first name to Spartacus on her 33rd
birthday, perhaps adopting the metaphorical identity of the heroic Roman slave
leader and unsuccessful revolutionary.
An absurd combination of the female artist and the tragic Roman hero
summoning fellow artists to rise up against their oppressors and find
liberation, this comic juxtaposition is a powerful theme in her work.

Her performances with a band of friends - like
some medieval mummer troupe - reanimates old narratives and stories. The
Fall of Man
(2006) took the book of Genesis, John Milton’s Paradise
Lost
and Marx & Engels's German Ideology and presented these texts as
puppet plays. Her performances, with
their handmade carnival aesthetic, draw on diverse imagery from high and
low culture and are made with the mind of an anthropologist (which she studied before training as an artist) and the spirit of an improvised theatre mob.

For The House of Fairytales portfolio Chetwynd
has drawn on the vampire tales of Bram Stoker, reproducing one of her gothic Bat
Opera
oil paintings.
These follow the romantic swirls of horseshoe bats at twilight, with their
curious pug-nosed faces and their rubbery twitching standing in counterpoint to the soaring perfection of the opera.
