Buffet’s distinctive angular style made him one of the most instantly recognisable and contentious artists in 20th century French art. His rich linework and carefully controlled palette gave each image a fierce expressionist intensity. His work as a printmaker allowed him to experiment with line and tone in ways that complimented his prodigious output as a painter. Still life would remain an enduring obsession throughout his career, and this late print is a fabulous example. It makes an astonishing impact in the flesh.
