Jeremy Deller & Alan Kane
Jeremy Deller and Alan
Kane have been friends and collaborators over many years. In addition to their successful individual art careers (Deller won the Turner Prize in 2004) they
have joined forces to put together The Folk Archive, a growing
collection of ephemera gathered from all over Britain. The eccentric and flamboyant aesthetics of styled celebratory cakes and wreaths, traditional handicrafts and other folk paraphernalia jostle with graffiti and often sinister
memorabilia from festivals and local ceremonies. The Archive questions the distinctions
between high art and low culture, whilst poking gentle fun at self-expression. Deller has focused much of his career
outside the gallery system by making films – Memory Bucket, a film about
Texas – and re-enactments of political events such as the The Battle of
Orgreave.
For The House of Fairy
Tales Portfolio Deller and Kane have contributed an image that celebrates the rhymes,
mischief and horse skulls of the South Wales Mari Lwyd (Grey Mare) festival, marking the darkest days of winter.
The skeletal head decorated with ribbons mixes the pagan fairy tale with
Top Gear and Father Christmas.
