Georgie Hopton cannot help
but have a sculptural response to objects, which are then painted, carved,
re-photographed and repositioned until they form the perfect image. Sometimes the surface is given a thick
impasto of paint, sometimes the object is transferred to canvas. Often the most harmless and innocuous of
domestic still lives is imbued with a pervasive emotion such as melancholy or
nostalgia. Although influenced by
Morandi and Picasso, her tableaux often have a glittery sparkle, perhaps
hiding the sadness and tragedy beneath.
This whimsical happy/sad side is reflected in the circus imagery that
reoccurs throughout her work. The Commedia
dell’arte characters – the loyal Pierrot and the mischievous Harlequin –
reappear both in paintings and performances, depicting the pull between
responsibility and fun. 

For The House of Fairy Tales Portfolio, Hopton has made a radical print of a small leaded castle window where one of
the panes has broken, as if the protagonist of the image has escaped to
freedom. The layering of this
piece is particularly subtle, with many applications of ink giving a pearlescent glow to the
panes of glass reflecting in front of the sky.
