Dexter Dalwood

Dexter Dalwood is a
realist painter who conjures pop culture scenarios like stage sets from his
imagination. He depicts scenes in
intricate detail with styling, interiors and references all meticulously
researched and recreated from an internal fantasy world.

The scenes are heavily loaded with symbolism
and narrative content. Images are selected
from moments of extreme significance, both in popular culture and sinister political portent. The
Queen's Bedroom (1998), and Kurt Cobain’s Greenhouse (2000) reveal the tragic
loneliness of celebrity and success, as well as hinting at the eery power and
powerlessness of public figures. These suggestive narratives are continued through political works such as
Gorbachev’s Winter Retreat (2000) and McCarthy’s List (2002) where the big men
scheme and fall. He humanises the heroes
and the powerful through the evidence and residue of their surroundings and
taste.

For The House of Fairy Tales portfolio Dalwood has created a collage depicting the rags to riches story of Cinderella, climbing the ladder into the opulence of the palace from the cave-like
claustrophobia of her childhood home.
Reminiscent of a torn-off film poster, the interior displays a
poster of Marx, suggesting the paradox of aspiration: the futile escape to
the glittering chandeliers away from the TV screen.
