The artwork
of Cornelia Parker moves dramatically from the vast, extreme and violent
(sending a meteor back into space, exploding a garden shed) to the tiny and
insignificant, (a feather taken from Benjamin Franklin’s attic, a hair from
Freud’s pillow). All her artworks tell
stories while allowing a quiet contemplation of either the violent act or the
philosophical psychology of politics.

A
garden shed inexplicably exploded into thousands of pieces is exhibited,
captured in silent poise: its post-blown-up state suspended in the gallery by
hundreds of invisible wires. Perhaps
this is suggestive of the bottled-up incendiary culture of the Englishman
pottering in the shed imagining the superhero inside. The minute evidence of world leaders, often
men, is forensically displayed like precious museum detritus, for the audience
to contemplate their humanity. Other
works show silent noise. The immaculate
formal display of a set of silver horn instruments suspended in the air after
having been mangled flat by a fantastically powerful squashing process.

For The House of Fairy Tales Portfolio the artist has provided a psychological moment of drama, a face
staring out from the dark in fear. The
narrative writing itself as you stare back.
