Italian-born Enrico David draws on extensive knowledge of theatrical carnival, fashion illustration and iconic fine art imagery to make images that quietly disturb and beguile. He makes paintings, sculptures and installations that are based on folk art influenced characters who are both ordinary and flamboyant. Their design-based presentation draws in the audience, captivating and mesmerising with their charming and flawed personalities. He uses traditional and meticulous craft techniques as well as rhetoric from international folk cultures to make images that have a camp theatricality and poignancy. He has been quoted as having a touch of 'late Malevich, Joe Orton and Francis Bacon' with 'something of Miss Jean Brodie'. His fine art images both paintings and sculptures reveal the talents of a storyteller, playwright, costumier, and theatre designer.
For the Portfolio Enrico David has created a costume design that is half way between fairy tale princess and Samurai Warrior. With its alien head and its Elizabethan ruff-shroud fanning like a ray, this arresting almost transvestite creature is celebratory and flamboyant with a sad distant expression.
