New Zealand-born Francis Upritchard is a maker, collector and ethnographer, gathering our fears and primal beliefs into totemic objects and museum displays fetishizing our junk from the attic. Her hand is always present in the work, modelling and adding to what is already a curious bowl, vase, part of a tennis racket. She draws her inspiration form the rituals of Ancient Egypt, Maori culture, Mediaeval Europe, African Voodoo, and Catholic relics. Her art exhibitions are museum displays offering us these talismans and taxidermy to protect us and remind us of our transgressive power over nature. Her overstretching sloth prostrated in the cabinet seems not just macabre but cruel. The dark side of fairy tales are woven through her props and creatures. The box containing the magic beans has a portent of something more sinister and witchery. The Aladdin's lamp when rubbed might unleash a malevolent genie here.

For the Portfolio Francis Upritchard has reproduced an image of her sculpture Clan of Rob. This character, a sage or a guru, a Christ like figure from India, or Ancient Britain is poised in meditative Om. His technicolour pallor and the garish rainbow field he sits on remind us of the empty hippy values of festival culture. He is searching for peace in a shrieking visual noise. The fairy tale turns into a nightmare.
