Simon English has been making lyrical drawings since the early 1990's. His subject matter and references collage children's books such as C.S. Lewis and Arthur Rackham with more contemporary imagery moving from jockeys and horse-riding to Raymond Pettibon and gay sexual fantasies. Avoiding the formal constraints of standard painting, Simon English thinks and describes with pencils, crayons, paint and collage to create his narratives like a Victorian manga scrapbook cartoon. His self-deprecating humour and pathos engage the viewer in subject matter that might otherwise be alienating or highly personal. The nostalgia of the attic and the private world of the sketchbook or diary are given public display in his flamboyant and bold picture-scapes.
For the Portfolio Simon English has drawn a sorrowful faun portrait encrusted with medallions and cameos of jewels and fairy tale characters like scars or armour. The title references the gender and sexual politics that has preoccupied the artist throughout his adult life. Foolish with self-conscious childhood memories (Pinocchio et. al.), the awkwardness is written clearly on his face as the fairy tale character awaits his fate with phlegmatic insouciance.
