David Hockney

After several years of intense work on stage designs for opera, Hockney embarked upon a series of twenty-six "Very New Paintings" in 1992. Almost abstract, they embrace a synthetic language of colour and space that celebrates the process of exploring the world from many different angles at once. Discussing the series, Hockney stated that “I started the group called Some Very New Paintings in 1992 after I had finished my set designs for Die Frau Ohne Schatten. These started simply and grew more and more complex. I soon realized that what I was doing was making internal landscapes, using different marks and textures to create space, so that the viewer wanders around.” This poster was created to mark the exhibition of some of these paintings at Salts Mill in 1993.
