This original lithograph comes from the beautifully created survey of one hundred and two post-war exhibition posters produced in 1959, by the Mourlot Studio. Included in this collection are lithographs by Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso.
In 1932, Braque's dealer Ambroise Vollard suggested that he undertake a project to illustrate a volume of Hesiod's Theogony, a 7th century BC text that narrates the creation of the universe and the origin of the gods. Between 1932 and 1935, Braque created sixteen etchings for the book, but the process of printing them was only completed twenty years later. The book was finally published by Maeght in 1955.
