To mark our return to the London Art Fair this January, we want to turn your attention to some of the magnificent works we will be bringing with us. First on the list is Pablo Picasso’s stunning Colombe de Paix for 'Pour un nouveau printemps', 1963.
Undoubtably one of the artist’s most iconic and enduring motifs, the Dove of Peace first appeared in Picasso’s work in 1949, after the artist was invited to create an image representing peace for the first International Peace Conference in Paris.
The artist created many renditions of the Dove of Peace over his lifetime, he modelled his very first study on a naturalistic sketch of a pigeon given to him by his friend and peer Henri Matisse. He later evolved his initial design into the simple line drawing we see in this lithograph. Though a lot can be said for Picasso’s many iterations of the Dove, the clean lines and vibrant colours of his line drawings combine to create an unmatched sense of purity and serenity alongside a powerful statement.
Hidden are pleased to offer up this lithograph alongside the handmade book it was originally created for: Pour un nouveau printemps(‘For a New Spring’), published in 1963. The accompanying book has a unique handmade cover of raffia and leather, with text by André Verdet. It is signed by the author and is further accompanied by a stunning loose photograph of Picasso by André Villers, with the photographer's stamp on the back.
It is not often that that we are able to offer a complete and original artistic and literary statement, let alone from one of the most prolific artists of the last century. We are incredibly excited to be bringing this along with us to the London Art Fair 2023.
Why is this work worth investing in?
Pablo Picasso is widely regarded as one of the most popular artists of all time and his market certainly shows no sign of cooling. 2023 marks 50 years since the artist’s death, with a whole host of exhibitions set to take place internationally, fascination in this already world renowned artist is only growing.
The small edition size, incredible story and visually appealing nature of this piece make it a fantastic option for investment.
