In our (admittedly biased) opinion, art is the best way to add depth, personality, and interest to your space. It can often be tricky, however, to know where to start with the growth and display of your home collection. As such, we have compiled a beginner’s guide to selecting the right pieces for your home, room by room. Combining these tips with your own personal style will get you well on your way to creating a space that you love!
Hallway
The first thing you and your visitors see upon entering your home, your entryway should be both functional and welcoming. Furthermore, as a space which will set the tone for the rest of your home, it can be useful to consider the mood you would like to create throughout your space. Whether you will be filling your home with energizing, bright colours, or a grounding palette of earthy neutrals – carefully placed art can immediately elevate a hallway from a forgettable passing-through point to an attractive taster to the rest of the home. Subtle abstract or Minimalist works can work particularly well as they provide visual interest and momentum without immediately overloading the eyes.
Top tip: seek a single medium-large piece with a similar colour palette, texture or theme to the rest of your home.
Living Room
Now this is where the fun really starts! As a space for lingering over a coffee with a guest, or relaxing with your family, living rooms are the perfect spots for large statement pieces which reward prolonged looking. Large-scale, eye-catching works with conversation-sparking subject matter often work best in living rooms. If smaller pieces are more your style, a carefully curated collection of a few complementary pieces can also be used to create a gallery wall. The trick here, though, is to seek works with a unifying feature – such as a colour, theme, or texture.
Top tip: select one large piece, or a collection of smaller works (or both if your wall space allows!) with enough visual interest to linger with and converse over for prolonged periods.
Bedroom
The most intimate space of the home – the bedroom is a perfect place for your most personal pieces. Intentionally hung artworks can soften harder lines in bedrooms – particularly over beds and dressers, in order to create a sense of elegance and serenity. As a space for rest, the best pieces for the bedroom tend to be those with a soothing colour palette and uncomplicated subject matter. Blues and neutrals have been proven to calm the mind, so works with these tones make great choices.
Top tip: softer, more minimalist pieces in calming blues and neutrals make the perfect addition to your sleep space.
Dining Room
As a space for both intimate conversation and lively communal gathering, dining rooms can be somewhat tricky rooms to hang. While bold, conversation pieces can certainly be an option here, they can sometimes distract from the real focus of the space – good food and great company! As such, a safer option could be to select a more subtle piece which complements and enhances your decor without stealing attention from the main event.
Top tip: subtle, abstract works in tones which complement your décor are a great choice for an inviting dining space
