This July, Chris, Sarah, and I were delighted to host our first wine tasting evenings at the Bath and Bristol galleries in collaboration with our neighbours at DBM Wines. The theme of the tasting was ‘Around the World with Rothschild,’ a dynasty synonymous with the very finest quality wines and with legendary estates that span the globe.
While the worlds of art and wine often coalesce, never so aptly as with Rothschild. In 1945, Baron Philippe established a tradition whereby celebrated artists of their day were invited to design the labels for Mouton Rothschild. You’ll recognise many of the names from our portfolio: Salvador Dali created the label in 1958, Pablo Picasso in 1973, Keith Haring in 1988, and David Hockney in 2014, to mention a few.
In Bath we exhibited a collection any Rothschild would have enjoyed. Artists they have invested in such as Andy Warhol Picasso, Hockney, Miro & Henry Moore were displayed on our walls. An original Lowry lithograph lasted all of 30 minutes before it was taken off the market. Two original Matisse blue Nudes also found new homes but ‘Radar Rat’ Banksy’s iconic composition was the firm favourite of the evening.
To coincide with the Bristol event, we opened our Picasso on Paper exhibition. It is the finest selection of hand-signed works by the master that we have ever brought together, and the collection went down extremely well alongside some fabulous wines!
