How signatures tell stories

A remarkably rare Renoir

Hidden has hand signed works available from every decade of the 20th and 21st centuries. The earliest work in our collection is a remarkably rare Renoir from 1911. This fine hand-signed photograph shows how a signature connects directly with an artist and tells a story.

In 1911, Renoir’s agent Ambroise Vollard became concerned that Renoir was getting old: his work was being copied and might need to  be authenticated in the event of his death. He decided to photograph all the works in Renoir’s studio, and have them notarised by the Mayor of Cagnes, using the Mayor’s official stamp. The majority of these photographs are in the archive at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, but there are a handful in circulation, including one owned by Hidden which was signed in ink by Renoir on 10 January 1911.

This is a unique, incredibly rare and stunning investment piece that encapsulates a piece of history like no other.
