Lichtenstein first produced the 'As I opened Fire' triptych as an oil and acrylic painting on canvas in 1964.
During the early 1960s, Lichtenstein was focussed on creating a pictorial language which would be understandable by all, moving art away from something rarified into an ‘everyday’ pleasure. To do this, along with the other artists of the Pop generation, he drew on picture-forms taken from newspaper advertising and roadside hoardings, and - most famously - from the extremely popular adventure comic strips of the day. The style and familiarity of these works drew instant public appreciation, though the intellectual art critics denied that they were ‘art’. They have become some of the most famous works of mid-20th century art.
