Giacometti's father - a noted painter and engraver in his own right - converted the old stable adjoining the family home in Stampa into a studio that he shared with his son. After his death in 1933, Alberto took over the space, returning from Paris every summer to work and visit his mother. The studio was an airy, spacious room with pine walls and views of the mountains, a complete contrast to the tiny, cluttered space of his Paris atelier. Annetta Giacometti possessed a strong personality and she began to appear regularly in her son's portraits during the 1940s.
Giacometti was an avid printmaker who worked in a variety of techniques, particularly lithography. From 1951 onwards he would create drawings on special paper using a lithographic pencil and transfer these images onto zinc printing plates. This had the benefit of allowing him to travel lightly and create original prints in a variety of locations.
