When first exhibited in 1944, Bacon's "Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion" immediately established his reputation as one of the world's most important post-war painters. The distorted, howling Furies that he unleashed in this triptych set the tone for the rest of his mature work.
Bacon often revisited earlier paintings and in 1988 decided to paint a second version of his masterpiece, more than doubling the size of the canvases and switching out the fiery orange of the originals for a deep blood red. The artist donated this second triptych to the Tate in 1991. These extraordinary lithographs were published after the paintings in 1989 in a small edition of sixty.
These signed prints capture Bacon at his most iconic and represent a defining example of Francis Bacon prints produced during the later part of his career.
