Angels are seen in many forms, both painted and cherub like. Angeli is the Italian name for angels painted in 14th and 15th century altarpieces. Mary is surrounded by figures playing musical instruments and is looked down upon by the angel Gabriel. Flowers surround the central images which again are photographs from the roses in the artist’s garden. Butterflies represent the transformation of life and death. The small skull at the top of the image is symbolic of our own mortality, and momento mori.
