This poster was inspired by a tiny lithograph in black and white dating from 1959 and featured in the work Designs for the Bible, published by Editions Verve. Chagall returned to the image and enlarged it, creating a colour maquette that was then followed by Chagall's long-term collaborator and friend Charles Sorlier. The finished poster was published to mark an exhibition of works by painters and glassmakers at the Cultural Centre in Reims. An edition of 1000 copies was printed on standard poster paper, and a further 50 signed and numbered copies on Arches wove paper. This piece is a proof aside from the signed edition of 50.
