With its heady blend of violence, vivid colour and the iconic Ben Day dots, Sweet Dreams Baby! is considered to be one of Lichtenstein's first "true" Pop prints. Originally printed in 1965, it formed part of the three-volume portfolio 11 Pop Artists. The project was sponsored by Philip Morris, in association with five galleries, and encouraged the launch of several exhibitions at museums throughout Europe. The same eleven artists produced a print for each volume of the portfolio, in an effort to bring greater international attention to what had been, initially, a mostly American art movement. The images they contributed were a celebration of American consumerism and capitalist optimism.
